I will give the same pretest at the end of the course that I gave at the beginning to let the students see how much they have learned. Most appreciate the difference in their knowledge at the end of the course and say Hey I did learn a lot.

I find that the pre-test is also helpful at the end of the class. It shows the students how far they've come, what they've actually learned, and how they've grown during the course.

I agree. I think that it is best for instructors to discuss the importance of the pretest and how it can be used to make the course more beneficial to them. They may not take it seriously if they are simply told that it does not count for class credit.
