We have a day before classes begin. The student from the cohort typically get to meet before their first day of class. By the time they get to their program specific course, I'm usually the one introducing myself. They usually know each better than family members. So, introductions are not necessary.

I work in a Dental Hygiene program. We have an orientation prior to the first day of school. The students and faculty introduce themselves to each other so the on the first day some of the nervousness is gone.
