students
I always start the first day with a bio questionaire as a starting point for me, for them
We always have the students introduce themselves to the class. It is a great way to break the ice between new students and existing students.
I usually start with an informal bio questionaire. I let the students tell the class a little bit about themselves and I like to have the sutdents write down what they would like to learn from the class after having having went over the syllabus. I feel its more of a personal touch they can add just for themselves and helps me get to know them better.
Eric,
I have used this activity as well. As a "follow-up", I refer back to these questions on the final day of the class and give the students an opportunity to discuss what they learned from the course. I find that this provides a great conclusion to the class and it is interesting to hear students discuss what they have learned.
