How To Handle Behavior Problems

I have trouble handling students with behavior problems, can you help me.

When experiencing behavior problems, it is best to try and determine the cause for the behavior. Subsequently, it is important for the educator to know what behavior problems need to be addressed immediately and which behaviors can be addressed after class. Furthermore, having withitness helps the educator maintain the momentum of the lesson at hand.

Kaylee,

I agree. In addition, some students cause disruption because they are already proficient with the material that is being covered. The best method for handling students in that category, is to provide additional challenges and opportunities for them to exhibit their knowledge, during a class discussion.

I have noticed that when I have a disruptive or distracted student it is usually due to the fact that he or she is lost or not understanding the subject matter. To bring them back up to where the class is I try to first ask them a question about what we have covered, then next ask them if they have any questions and I am usually able to draw them back to the subject while catching them up to speed.

Timothy,

I have also had to separate students during lecture. They are initially upset, however the behavior is usually "curbed", because they do not want to experience the embarassment in the future.

As mentioned, it depends on the form of disruption. One of our most common forms is talking between friends who sit together. We will warn them, in private, the first time. If the problem continues, we will separate them. They are never happy about that, but it works in most cases.

Whenever I have a disruptive student in the class I will try and get them engaged in subject. This way there mind is on something productive. Sometimes I have to ask the student to leave the classroom if they continue to be disruptive.

Jeannette,

There are several methods that I have used for handling disruptive students. What are the prevalent "behavioral problems", with your students (e.g. disruptive during lectures, exhibiting disrespectful actions towards the other students, etc.)?
