Lesson Planning

One of the biggest concerns for me is making sure I have a complete lesson plan that not only encompasses the time in class, but also has some extra material in case we get through a lecture or activity early.

Scott,

I have found that the "backpocket" activities can be very effective for the course. In situations where time does not permit for them to be used, I have found ways to convert them electronically and add them to the student portal, usually for extra credit. This is another way to continuously keep the students engaged, outside of class.

That's a good point, I do the same thing. In fact, I usually have a couple of activities that I can do depending on how much time I have. Sometimes I don't even get to them, but it's nice to know I have them in my back pocket. Lab is an excellent way to fill extra time, but you have to be careful how deep into something you get, as you might not have enough time.

I like to mix lecture with class work/projects. Lecturing for too long can lose their attention, and lab work for too long can do the same. It's best to have a balance.
