Preparing a lesson plan

My lesson plan in the form of a course book and a schedule, are provided by our school. I feel this adds consistency to a course in a situation where more than one instructor teaches the same course in a given time frame. The lesson plan allows students to switch to another class and instructor in cases of emergency. Because the lesson plan is a guideline to what is taught, the instructor still has flexibility as to life lessons and personal experiences. In addition the instructor can add worksheets and other material to the lesson plan.

Robert,

There are several resources available for creating lesson plans. However, does your school have a universal template? In most cases there is a standardized format that instructors must use to prepare their plans.

In general, I decided to enroll in this class because I am required to write lesson plans, but I have very little experience in the actual mechanics of doing them. For example, there seems to be some common bullets among lesson plan outlines, which include Objectives, Performance Tasks, Outcomes, etc. I'd like to know the best practices of accomplishing a written lesson plan. Are there resources or examples online that could assist me?

My courses are currently going through a curriculum review that is driving us toward many changes that will require new lesson plans. My team and I are happy with the changes, but dread the pain of developing new lesson plans. The good that will come out of the new lesson plans is that outdated material and irrelevant topics will be either updated or deleted. My point is that lesson plans are only as good as we make them and they have to be kept up to date.

So true and at my school our department has a lesson plan that is developed for our needs in the advanced classes. Sometimes we do not get specific ingredients, so we will veer off of it and re-direct our students to hone in on the competencies of that product. Students often times will ask us if we can do this more often as it creates a challenge for them thinking outside of the box............
