preparing lesson plans
I do believe that knowing your audience is the most important thing. if you take the opportunity to know your students teaching contents will be much easier. knowing what they know and what they don't know identifying strength and weakness you will know what area to target.
Michael,
How often do you have to update your syllabus to account for the outliers?

Tralanda,
I agree. That is why it is important that assessments are created to fully capture if students are able to effectively understand and apply course concepts.

I use a syllabus that I have perfected over the years that works for almost 100% of the students. The occasional outlier can be brought into the mainstream with carefull questioning so determine their skill set and level of expertise.
I think that when you identify what the students need to know, the material that is taught can have a positive impact on the final or any assessment.
I think the assessment should be part of the objective so student know the standard they are being held to.
Neda,
I agree. It is important to create assignments during the first week that enable the instructor to get to know the students.
