Pretest

I like the idea of learning about students and assessing their levels of knowledge, but I think it is very important to make the students comfortable when giving a pretest. Tests can cause anxiety, and starting off a class with a test risks scaring off some students.

This is true but a pretest can be a valuable tool to teach the right material at the right pace. It gives you knowledge to work with rather than teaching blind. Teaching at the proper level will help keep the students engaged. It can also help the students learn your testing style and help aleviate some of the testing anxiety especially when the test "doesn't count".
