Sherri,

I agree with this observation. As I mentioned earlier in the discussion thread, all assignments, activities and student assessments should developed in alignment with the learning objectives and ultimately, the program outcomes.

Daniel ,

Do the instructors collaborate when revising the course guidelines or are the revisions done individually?

Tremayne Simpson

Since one of the goals of an education is to prepare the student for employment in their chosen field it is vital to use the standards of the field as guidelines to ensure that the students are given all relevant information to help them succeed when they join or rejoin the work force.

By helping the students to procure employment and succeed in their chosen field it will reflect positively on the school where they received their education.

A competent instructor should always use standards that reflect the benchmarks in the course curriculum.

John,
I feel the same way. It is my job to intruct the students on what to expect when they go out in the field. More so if it's an specialty area within the field. Like Automatic Transmissions within the Automotive industry. As for the technical aspect of it, it's perhaps more detailed, and patience is a good virtue to have for this type of work.

As an instructor of entry level automotive techs we need to follow field standards to the tee as our partners expect training in areas they put forth. We may add to the content in the guidelines, however never take away any.

Daniel,

This is an effective analogy. In my experience, students seem to apply better effort in class, when they understand how the learning objectives can assist them in better understanding their career field.

Creating a lesson plan without using field standards is like teaching an aspiring automotive technician how to fillet a fish...useful information, but useless towards what your students will need to know to make a living in the field you are teaching.

Kevin,

How often are your course descriptions and learning objectives changed, in order to keep up with the field of study?

Tremayne Simpson

Krista,

I agree. Our students are strongly encouraged to seek membership in field-related associations (later in their academic programs) to ensure that they receive the most current career standards and information.

Tremayne Simpson

no need to stay up to date with changes in the field you are teaching, hvac changes every year.
I need to stay informed with the ever changing field.

It's extremely important because the students are studying to become a part of the field of study in which I teach. They will need to be up to date on the newest technologies and standards within the field.

Michael,

I agree with this statement. It is also important that the students are provided with opportunities/assignments that enable them to research their desired fields of study.

Tremayne Simpson

by using your experience in a particular field, you will know what is expected of entry level technicians, use that to determine lesson strategies

David,

Great observation. In addition to their research on industry standards, students should also know about practices that are not the standard for their field of study. In research there can be conflicting ideologies, however it is important for the students to be able to know where to find "trusted" sources.

Tremayne Simpson

Caren,

Excellent observation. The students can also use trends and industry forecasting to enhance their creativity, which will be key in establishing themselves in the job market.

Tremayne Simpson

Adel ,

It is also important that the student understand industry standards, in order to be competitive with their peers. It is clear that many of their fellow classmates will be their direct competition for potential employment.

Tremayne Simpson

We are teaching students so that they can go out and get jobs. It is important for them to be competitive in their chosen industry. In order for them to be competitive, they should have standard knowledge of current practices in the industry. So, understanding what the current practices in the industry are, as the instructor, makes it easy for us to write the lesson plan and include pertinent industry objectives.

As it is, my school creates lessons plans for me. That makes it easier for me, however, that means I have to study the lesson plans and make sure I am current with what the school expects me to cover.

Keeping the class on par with what is current in the industry helps lend relevance to the things that they are learning. There are constant changes in trends in food. By staying on top of it we can help our students be ready to enter this field.
