Importance of Rationale

I think the imporatnce of rationale can't be underestimated. I think it helps having students "buy into" the subject matter at task. Many times when I teach my class, I encounter subjects that are a little obscure, plain, hard to comprehend, or flat out old school and boring. I personally take a little of the class time (typically when I introduce the subject) to explain the relevance of the subject, and its relation to the overall picture.
I normally don't include this explanation in my lesson plan, but I think its a good idea to have it as part of it.

In a clinical setting it is vital to provide a rational for instruction so students critical thinking will develop and they don't become task oriented

I feel it's critical to establish a direct connection between the curriculm and the behavior or practices of successful professionals. Often I too will take some class time to relay my professional experience with the subject matter and how it helped me to exceed the customers expectations and advance in my career both financially and in recognition amongst my peers.

I teach a healthcare class. In healthcare we need to know why we do something and not take for granted we do a task just because we are told to do it.

Kathy,

I agree with this approach. In order to enhance the learning experience for career college students, they must find "intrinsic" value within their course activities. Providing lectures and activities that align with their career aspirations, will motivate them to submit higher-quality work.

I find that it is extremely important to make a connection between the course material and the application of this material to the students career choice. For example, when teaching textiles to merchandisers,I relate the target market, cost and selling price of a garment to each fiber type. They relate to this approach and see the relevancy of learning textiles.

Vivian,

In general, students are enthused by courses that provide unique learning experiences. Therefore, it is important that instructors use "pop-culture" examples and analogies, to further enhance the learning environment.

Cristian,

I agree. In most cases, if a "bland" topic is presented, the students will appreciate further explanation (as to why it is being covered) and would benefit from an enthusiastic, instructional approach. When I cover the "boring" material, I make sure to provide fascinating examples and unique activities, in order to increase student interest.

I always use rationales with my teaching plan. Students enjoy knowing he "why" or relavence of what is being taught. I have more verbal feedback and participation in the classroom. I have had many students who have thanked me for "making the class real" because with rationales they are able to identify with real life experiences and it increases the learning process.
