How does synthesis of the content enable students to retain more of the information?
victor,
When you discuss project guidelines, do you explain the concepts of the Learning Taxonomy to your students (for example: informing your students that a particular assignment relates to a particular level of the taxonomy)?

given the objectives to a project and discussing a project of how to aproach,go through and finsh really helps before the hands on starts.I can use the methods mentioned to strenghten student understanding .
Marshall,
I have also used somewhat, obscure activities in an effort to enable my students to use critical thinking methods. Abstract questioning and activies can really open-up their thinking when it comes to comprehension of course-based, theoretical concepts. I find that using "Tangrams" is an exciting and simple activity, that can be used to "break the ice" and get the students to use "big picture" thinking.

Often times students are focused on the "factual knowledge' needed to get the correct answer. I found that a great way to get them to look at the big picture thus understand the principle concept as a whole. We play a game that I call the "Anistazi Indians Numerical System". Here I place three objects on the table(let's say ink pens). I arrange them in an odd fashion and ask the students to guess which number from 1-10 this represents in the Anistazi system. Their guesses are all over the board until one gets the clue from the digits I'm showing with my fingers to the side. I continue to hint that they need to look at the big picture (my clues to the side). Later when teaching broader concepts of a learning point, I recall the number system game and it makes it easier to get the points across.
Michael,
I believe that at this stage the student has maximized their ability to retain the information, because they are able to take the material that they have learned and reformat it into a new model of thinking. It really is an advanced way of applying the information into other contexts.
