The Taxonomy of A Writing Class

The basics of a writing class can underwhelm an instructor with the simplicity of the goals. However, if one takes the time to explore the function and levels of the knowledge imparted in the class, the strategy itself can turn the class into a much more exciting endeavor.

I agree. As a general education instructor, when explaining the class learning objectives, I always include specific examples of situations where the course information, will have a direct impact on the student's future. For example, if you have a Graphic Design student taking a writing course, it is a good idea to explain a particular learning objective and provide an example of how it would relate to someone in their field. With larger classes, I turn this into a collaborative activity and place all of the students with peers in their majors and have them develop examples of how the course learning objectives would adhere to someone in their desired career field.

I think that today's students underestimate how important a writing class will be in terms of future success. In assigning research papers, I provide students with a very specific grading rubric to guide them in their research as well as their paper. I also allow them opportunities to submit it to me in advance to proof read and correct for a higher grade. I know that many of my students have forgotten the basic conventions of writing and so a review is critical. If you create meaningful objectives, students will value the course more for the skills it will provide them for the future.
