Understanding Learning Objectives

Our objectives are layed out in the student workbook, I cover what we will be learning and why at the start of each day. Hopefully the student has read over that lesson plan the night before So they already have an idea of what is going to be taught that day.

This is a constant question for instructors, as they try to enhance student engagement. More than likely there will not be a situation where you have 100% of your students engaged, however in order to get to the majority of the students, it will take an effort in diversifying instructional methods and assigning projects (that meet the learning objectives) that are interactive and enable to students to apply their learning.

Objectives are a 50/50 because you have your students that want to know what they will be learning but most of them don't take the time or don't care ? How do I reach out to my other 50% of the class to make them understand why objectives are so important?

It gives the student a guide to prepare the for there daily lesson and prepare them for the next day. At the school I teach at we write our lesson plan for a three week course cycle

Our objectives (the what's) are laid out in PowerPoint at the beginning of lecture. At the end of each day's lecture I cover what will be covered on the next day and provide information as to where one could find the information so that once the next day arrives the student will have background on the subject matter at hand. This allows for a more through discussion of the subject matter when the student has read and prepared for the next class day.

At the end of lecture I proceed to cover the "how's" and "why's" of each project during the course map coverage.

I also try to tell the student what we will be learning in class or labs at the start of the class. I will sometimes specifically ask if the student has read the materials.

I agree that setting the benchmark/standard is important for the students.

students seem to need lesson plans in order to prepare for the next days assignment and everyday after that.
