Making class interesting
I find that incorporating a lot of different teaching strategies into a class makes it interesting and at the same time addresses different learning styles. Playing videos, introducing games for learning and sharing real-life experiences helps. Students get bored if all a teacher does is read lecture notes and then gives tests.
As a pastry instructor when i ever i can get a chef from the industry to come in it really connects for the students
I try to incorpoarte real world experiences. The stuent's enjoy having guest speakers, it energizes the classroom. Field trips are interesting, too.
There are weeks when I have the students work out situations in groups that correspond to the lesson. They work collaborately to find a solution, then I have the groups share from their responses. I ask them to support their answers to assess their critical thinking of the issue. There are times when all the groups come to the same conclusion and others where they do not. This leads to a great discussion and a variety of rationales.
I like to have cook offs at the end of the week of all the cooking methods we went over during the week
Making the class fun and engaging will keep the students interest up and there wanting to learn with wanting to coming to class every day.
I also try to take advantage of as many varied teaching strategies as possible. These are valuable tools for creating a stimulating learning environment.
Christopher ,
I believe that most instructors are constantly finding ways to enhance their lectures and promote student engagement. Actively participating in discussion forums, is a great way to collaborate with other instructors, regarding instructional methodology.

I agree that nothing is worse than just standing and lecturing to the students. I replied to this forum because I wanted to see that I am not "alone" with this problem. I do demonstrations for my class but even that seems to become part of the norm to the students after while.
I read several good ideas and techniques here and will begin to incorporate them into my lesson plan where I can and at what levels I can...
Nothing is worse than just standing and lecturing to the students. Ugh! I love bringing guest speakers into the classroom or lab portion of class and have them show what they do in their day. The students gain a greater interest and understanding of their field of interest.
I also use different teaching strategies to keep interest in my classrooms. I use interactive lectures, sharing real-life experiences, guest speakers, and group projects to encourage all to participate.
I make my classes interesting by showing real world examples of what I'm currently working on professionally. My field is music production, so showing the students current projects is very interesting for them, and lets me highlight points of interest that coincide with the day's lesson.
To show the students these projects, I use my laptop connected to a projector, and the audio comes through speakers set up at the front of the classroom.
After I show these projects, students are usually inspired to learn more about how I create certain sounds, and get involved by asking lots of questions in class.
I agree ,I agree. We have our norm Power Point presentations for our lectures. But it gets quite boring for the students and the instructor. So I as well and alot, do stop from time to time and show videos and share many real world experiances and give lots of field tips, it gives more energy to the class and more interaction. Thanks
I agree that is can be boring at times if there is nothing but lecturing.......I incorporate videos and game playing as well as class interation.
