Jeopardy Games
The Instructor Resource Material from the course I teach came with Jeopardy games. After the PowerPoint presentation we do the Jeopardy games. It is fun and forces everyone in the class, even the quite one, to participate.
it is amazing that the students really enjoy playing to learn. It is the competitive nature of the beast.
Barbara,
I agree. Games not only engage the students, but also encourage them to focus on the material. Generally, when I let my students know that there will be a Jeopardy game review, they make sure to study their notes and read the textbook, prior to class.

I just attened a technology seminar for my field and we played jeopardy on the computer so that we could see the value of using it as teaching review tool and it was a lot of fun. It was something that I will definately use.
Jonathan,
I agree. They are especially great, if there are prizes involved or some sort of incentive. Simple incentives can go a long way with student engagement.

I think Jeopardy type games are great. My students have loved playing grammar Jeopardy, and they are most engaged when we play games. Definitely a fan.
D'Ann,
I recommend using "Tangrams". Tangrams enables the students to actively use critical thinking and collaboration skills, within the informal, context of a game. Tangrams are similar to puzzles, however the "rules" provide an extra degree of difficulty and competitiveness. Tangrams can be found in most teacher's stores.

Do you recommend any other classroom games?
My students love the jeopardy game as well. I get positve feedback and good test results.
Jeopardy Games are great along with hang man in medical terminology
My students love to play Jeopardy. I like it because everyone participates and it certainly breaks up lecture time.
Helen,
I agree. Games also work well as an exam review opportunity. The competitive nature, tends to make the students more prepared and engaged with the exam content. Interestingly, they are usually more prepared for the game, than they are for the actual exam.

My students love the games. One came to me, after doing Jeopardy, and stated she felt she had learned more than class period than usual. I try to have some type of active participation during the class period and not just 2 hours of lecture.
