Technology slowing down learning

I try to integrate technology into my classroom, but sometimes all of the technology overwhelms the computer system and it just shuts down or takes forever to load the next slide in a powerpoint. So I have found that some times less is more.

I try to use a lot of technology in my classroom.
I find that prepping equipment ahead of time is key ...having everything in place before class starts... will minimize the amount of time wasted waiting on browser to launch etc. of course I do occasionally loose time when the video projector malfunctions ...very frustrating. I usually just jump to the next set of lecture notes & spend more time on seeing videos the next class meeting...which cuts down on variety...but does keep the lesson flow on track. technology can be your best friend when it works or your worst nightmare when it does not!

I love back-up plans. I have taught in so many different institutions with many different levels of technology, and I find that if I become too dependent on it, I can actually forget how to teach without it. I think going back to basics can really be helpful sometimes, as technology can sometimes hamper communication between you and the students.

While waiting for tech tools, I try and tell a story from the field, relating how to be professional when things look like they aren't going right.

Sheila,

I agree. It is important to know the limitations of your classroom technology. Also, it is best to have "back up" plans, just in case there is technical difficulty.
