TECHNOLOGY IN CLASS ROOM SMART PHONES

I TEACH CNC MACHINING IN A POST SECONDARY SCHOOL
I ENCOURAGE MY STUDENTS TO USE THE CAMERA FEATURE
ON THEIR PHONE TO RECORD SET-UPS CONTROL FEATURES
FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

I teach medical assisting and I too have been trying to incorporate smart phones into the teaching of topics. :) I have students look up information as well as good sites to research information. They seem to like it. :)

That's awesome. I use my iPad to go through tech manuals in class, show signal flow diagrams, and get them involved by having them search topics we are learning about online with their laptops and phones when applicable.

I find that phone pictures are a great help when they need copies of what I have written on the board. They can take a picture of what the objectives are, what the homework is, and take videos of the processes learned that day. I just think we have to be aware of the students that don't have this option. Be prepared with something for them or allow enough time for them to write down what they need.

Hi Dan,

I have had students use their cell phones to take pictures of my Power Point slides in lieu of taking notes, which I was not always a big fan of; however, I had one student tell me that doing so allowed him to really focus on my lecture and not get so bogged down with trying to take notes while following along. It struck me that this is a great example of how technology can support our students and facilitate learning!

I was also recently at a meeting where our speaker utilized a polling application that allowed him to ask questions and then we, as audience members, could text our answers to him, which then showed up in "real time" on the projection of his computer screen. It was instantly engaging for us as his "students" and once again reitterated just how much excitement technology can bring to what might otherwise have been a somewhat mundane discussion.

In summary, I'm a fan of using smart phones in the classroom, so long as we as instructors can manage them appropriately.

Thanks,
Karin

I use power point only that too depending on the class . And sometimes I use technology for the review.

I agree, it is a good way to have a referance in your pocket, this helps when you need to apply the skills that have been taught

Good as long as you can keep them on track

Great idea, i do the same thing with my student when i break down lamb, pig, veal... it works great
