Support materials
Support materials assist greatly with the content that I deliver. Use of the internet, books, magazines, diagrams. I find that by using various methods and materials I am able to better keep my students "awake",focused and engaged during class, and this in turn stimulates the student into wanting to be more involved in the classroom.
I have used You tube videos as well with very good results. My classes meet one evening a week and are over 5 hours in length. It is a refreshing "change of scenery" to have a 'new' instructor (via You tube) demonstrating a skill before we practice it or reviewing a concept that was taught in class. On one occasion, I had the students watch a You tube video that focused on the errors in technique when performing a venipuncture. I purposely muted the narrator during the video and had each student try to identify as many mistakes as they could. I then played the video again, this time with the narrator pinpointing all the errors. The students had fun comparing their observations with that of the narrator's.
I use various internet sites. I have used You tube for some fun short informational videos. The students really enjoy the breaks that reinforce the lesson.
The variety of materials keeps the students engaged but can also let them see real world examples of the application of the skill we are learning.
