Teaching/Learning with Adaptive Learning

How do you think adaptive learning will change teaching and learning?

Annette,
Let us hope that only the job description will change and that instructors will still be needed.

Renee Shaffer

Adaptive learning will ultimately change the job description of teachers wherever it is implemented. It does this by removing the aspect that the teacher drives the format and function of learning but rather the students. The teacher will facilitate and monitor student performance and have more one on one time with each student for coaching. The in-class instructional time will be better utilized with relevant topics and can move at a faster pace for those that are excelling.

Theodore,
And sometimes all they need is a helping hand or a push forward. Self assessment can help them along.

Renee Shaffer

Adaptive learning will make the learning process more student-centered. The focus of teaching will change from grades, course completion and test scores to accumulation of valuable skills, learning and retention. Students will be individually grouped by ability and not by age. Integrated software will be the main focus not textbooks. Self-assessment and individual pace will become more important than lectures and direct instruction.

Renee,
I think that being student centered will help to focus students in areas that they really need help with. Give them a challenge, will keep them from getting bored learning things that they already know. For teachers, it will allow them to hone in on students that really need help, and allow them to spend more time with those students.
