Online Active Instruction

Having many years of both classroom and online instruction experience, I know that fostering an active learning environment online is much different, and often much more difficult, than in traditional classrooms. In online classes, I engage students by allowing them to co-teach at times: they prepare a few minutes of material and present to the class in a virtual meeting. I also ask them to peer-assess and self-assess their work before submitting to me for the final grade. These allow active learning even in an online environment.

That is a great idea, and would work for a lot of classes. Those I teach online would be difficult to impliment that. However, I find that using pictures and asking the students what they are seeing, is a great way to get them to partipate and use their new found knowledge.

Hi Marilyn,
Get started, by doing a little at a time. Don't think about changing everything at one time...way too overwhelming.

I am really struggling with coming up with active learing methods and changing my death by power point to engaging the students. I have ideas on how to get started but need to change many hours of lecture to active learning activities. I like group discussion and case studies. How do I get started?

Hi Jesse,
I like the idea of allowing students to peer-assess. It is amazing what students can do to help each other so that grades are improved.
