Resistance to change from peers & admin

I've transitioned to more small group activities in my writing class (which means less lecture). There was some concern about my students covering enough of the curriculum. The proof of success for me was the increase in the quality and quantity of their graded writing.

Hi Kevin,
This is a good strategy to utilize to learn who those shy students will be.

Hello Veronica,
I agree. In time most students will willingly offer their opinions. I personally like this strategy because I can then identify the shy student. From there I can build their esteem to have their voice heard

Hi Veronica,
I let my students know on Day 1 that I love for them to get invovled. A lot of students have great information to add to the discussion.

I include group discussion in every lecture. At the start of the semester, students are reluctant to voice their opinions or answers, but by the end of the semester most of them actively participate with questions, comments or personal experiences. This makes the lecture a lot more engaging and relevant.
