Implementing Games

In my new class we are to lecture on one day and lab the next and one of the requirements is for us to teach our students culinary math. The challenge is that they have never been taught this material before which makes it a challenge. My solution after teaching the formulas is to give them a actual recipe to cost out and write out the formula and walk around the classroom to ensure that my students get it. I even add on these costing problems as a bonus question on their quizzes. I agree that with our current generation we old school teachers need to get with the times and change our teaching styles in order for our student success

Hi Angela,
Great incentive to have students work toward. It is a great combination to have fun while learning.

I find it helpful to play jeopardy the day prior to an exam to help review material, learn on a deeper level and students seem to enjoy it making learning fun and interactive. I will give 2 points to the winning team toward exam to increase motivation and sincerity in playing the game.

Hi Greg,
Jeopardy is a lot of fun, and students get real competitive. The biggest plus for this game or any game is the students are having fun while learning.

In one of our courses we changed the entire lesson into a game of jepordy with the class dividing into groups and awarded points to each group the students get competive and have search through material to coach the one giving an answer , its alot of fun .

Hi Peter,
Awesome! You are right we have to change the way we taught years ago for this new generation. I like to use a lot of fun ways to teach through games, field trips, guest speakers, case studies, scenarios, etc. to keep my students engaged. I also use technology every opportunity I get as well.

Hi everyone...Mike,hello again.
After several in-services here at the institution where I teach at, the primary goals are how to connect to the new generation of students that are in our schools today.
It seems we have to re-connect in a different way/language, and doing it in a creative and fun way.Classroom game exercises seem to be the way to go. Because of their short attention spans, I have groups that helps and participate in teaching a particular part of the class, and the other group then evaluates how the message got to be recieved and what they would do differently.
We use different learning styles of lecture and also we recreate the distractions that the class somtimes engage in. It opens up the students perception on WHAT, HOW,and WHY things are done that way, and they can then APPLY the learning outcomes for the day.
They can make it as fun as they want, but keeping the main objectives for the learning outcome.
I enjoy the exercise as I also learn from them.

Hi Mike,
Games are fantastic, and you are right everyone jumps in.

Hi Kim,
Wow, you just captured my attention. This is a great idea to grab your students' attention.

Patricia Scales

I have found games to be very helpful in getting all the students involved and focused.

Hi Chef Malloy,
I do agree that students will retain info easier if it is fun to them. When I teach the costing, I usually make up absurd recipes. For some reason, this captures their attention a little bit more. Some of the recipes we've costed are roadkill pot pie, salad of poison ivy with candied crickets. I know it seems weird, but I think the weirdness of it captures their attention a bit better than the traditional way.

Hi Glenn,
Students are more exciting about participating when they know that they will receive something from it.

Patricia Scales

Hi Michael,
Students enjoy having fun while learning; they also like it when learning is applied to the real world.

Patricia Scales

Mike, that is a great idea and concept. I will give this a try but i will ask the entire class to do and offer a reward of extra class points just for doing the work. Thanks for your imput.

Glenn

Hi Chef Ochi I know that this is your first term at this and i agree This is my second term and the students should know by now to do simple math and costing.I do a game every lecture day the soux chef needs to cost out one of the recipes for the next day and share it with the class.and we look at it and evaluate.

Hi Glenn ,
I agree! We have to make learning entertaining for our students, therefore time brings on changes. We have an excellent coure on teaching Generation Y students.
