Lectures

In My Lectures They are more of a class discussion students get to give their imput and help facilitate the discussions. Also many times I do a mixture of lecture and activities.

Hi Craig,
I concur! All lecture is boring; students need and enjoy variety. Students especially like visuals to learn.

When I lecture I incorporate various components and tools for the students to examine, and also move to the lab so they can inspect some of the larger assemblies they will be dealing with. It is always a plus to break away from the lecture so the students can have a state change.

Hi Steve,
Students can get off topic. It is the instructor's responsibility to reel students back into the topic at hand.

Patricia Scales

That is a great way to engage them. You just have to be careful that the discussion doesn't get sidetracked too far off the original topic.

Hi Scott,
Great opportunity for your students. I understand how this requires more work on your part, but you want your students to be the absolutely best.

Patricia Scales

I actually prefer a lecture/demo combination followed by a short interactive class activity. This keeps everyone on their toes.

Also another technique I have found helpful is using a student sous chef as my helper during demo. It requires a bit of extra management and direction on my part, but it gives another student a new opportunity each day to be exposed to new material. I end up lecturing and then guiding the student through the demo. Mistakes may happen (and are inevitable), but this provides an excellent opportunity for discussion of what not to do and why to avoid doing it.

Thank you!!

Hi Steven,
Students tend to like group work, and they learn from each other.

Patricia Scales

I agree, when I do my lectures getting the student involved as a group seems to work best.

Hi Diane,
Students really get into the lecture when they can actual DO!!

I also mix my lectures and classroom activities. If feel that the student are more interested with the subject matter when they are involved. The students tend to ask me more questions with the activities then just listening to a lecture.

Hi Brian,
The variety is good to help keep students engaged. I also like the discussion portion of your lecture so that students feel involved.
