LECTURES
LECTURING IN THE COURSE I TEACH NOW REQUIRES AN INTERACTIVE DICUSSION BETWEEN MYSELF AND MY STUDENTS. THIS GIVES THE STUDENTS A CHANCE TO INTERACT WITH MYSELF AND THE OTHER STUDENT IN THE CLASS. THE RESULTS OF THIS INTERACTING GIVES EVERYONE AN INSITE TO MANY AND VERIERED OPINIONS.
Hi Daniel,
Whenever the instructor controls the interaction from students, I have found that they are more willing to get involved with each other/group. I like trying to put an extrovert with an introvert.

I agree getting the students to interact is sometimes difficult but a lot more fun and affective
Hi Kassy,
I have found that most students need lecture/explanation in order to understand various concepts. A lot of our students cannot read with comprehension, they need us to provide clarity.

I think it's important to keep students engaged, especially if lecture is part of the class time.. Conversely, if it's possibly to flip the classroom, I prefer to leave the lecture/fact book content to homework, and allow the meeting time to actually use the facts learned in some manner.
Hi Nathaniel,
Students really become more engaged if they have the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning.

Jack, I use the classroom as more of a discussion to talk about new subjects but will also integrate lab demonstrations into the discussion of new subjects. This can help bring out questions about the subject matter that may not arise in the class. I also notice that this will help "break the ice" among students that may be to shy to talk to each other.
Hi Dave,
I understand when a class takes off SLOW. I try to be real creative in those classes that have slow take offs by doing hands-on activities and playing games.
Patricia Scales
I try to use interactive discussion during my lectures. Since I teach a beginning (culinary) course, it can be a bit slow in the early days of the course. As the students grow their base of knowledge usually after the first week, discussions really begin to take off
Hi Jeffrey,
A Q&A sessions can add a lot of clarity.
Patricia Scales
I to use this when time allows. if time doesn't allow I will always encorporate a intense q&a during lecture to help students get different points of view to different situations and problems they mey face.
I, too, use lecture with discussion in some of my classes. Students really seem to enjoy it and learn a lot from it. They seem to have a lot to contribute.
Hi Jean,
Some classes simply require a lot of lecture, but it sounds like you change things up whenever you can.
Patricia Scales
Hi Steven,
All lecture can certainly bore students. We need to add variety to make the lesson interesting. Anytime you have the opportunity to include active learning do so.
Patricia Scales
My class schedules lectures every other day. This is a whole day of lecture and some demos. It is very hard sommetimes to hold attention for all of the lectures. I try to use active learning projects every day. It breaks the monotany of straight lecture, and makes the student feel as they are an important part of their own learning process.
I,too, use a fair amount of lecture because of the nature of some of the courses I teach- but I ask a lot of questions during the lectures and give the students a chance to review what we talked about. This is a frequent occurrence during lectures. Sometimes I intersperse a case study or example from personal experience to illustrate a point of the lecture.
Hi Jack,
Class interaction is always good to ensure everyone is understanding.
