I often like to use animations and computer generated imaging, this seems to reach the visual lerners well.

Powerpoints are dreadful if they are composed of words only. Every slide should include a good image and a brief outline that supports the concept. Most of our adult students are visual learners and need to see what we are discussing. Short video clips are also easy to link into a powerpoint; good ones can be the next best thing to being there.

Hi Donald,
Games break the monotony! It is a great mixture when you can have fun while learning.

I do games in my class and it does help c
keep them interested

Hi Junella,
What a great way to reach your visual learners. Some students really have to see it in order to understand it.

Hi Jaylene,
I also like to encourage participation by issuing a participation grade.

Iam a fairly new instructor to theory classes but in my observations I have found the students to tire of the games & only a few will interact. The suggestion of bingo sounds like a fun game to try, this is one we haven't done. Thanks for the idea.

Hi Denise,
I have found that Jeopardy and Bingo are two good exciting games for students. You may want to try to google learning games to get some additional ideas. Remember though, you have to be excited to get your students excited. Jeopardy can be incorporated into PowerPoint by utilizing the slides.

Hi Carol,
A nice mixture is hands-on with theory. Students get excited and feel like they have really learned the material when they can apply what they have learned.

Hi Kimberly,
Great ideas! You can also use real people (students) and have students tape the anatomical name to the correct part.

I play games with my students but sometimes they get boring. Is there a website or book that can give me some new ideas for games? Even I get bored sometimes! I'm not a fan of power point lectures. As a matter of fact I find them dreadful. How can I incorporate games into the powerpoint program?

much of what i teach is theory based as well however we do have a lot of hands on that students practice which keeps it interesting.

One of our instructors has the students make flashcards with pictures of skin diseases. You could try having the students tape the anatomical name to the correct part if you have a plastic torso model or even a laminated anatomical diagram that is unlabeled.

Hi Denise,
Trying play games! Students love it when learning involves games.

Since I always have a handful of students who are visual learners, I try and find videos on a "boring" topic in order to help students in understanding the topic from another point of view. For example, I have to teach on kidney transplants through the ultrasound standpoint. The chapter covers the technique and labs pertaining to the procedure. I started finding videos of the actual procedure itself and as the videos are playing, I remind students of the role they have as sonographers (technique) and what labs they should be looking for before the procedure starts. After the video, I discuss with the students the things that pertain to us and the things that are outside our scope of practice. This opens up the floor for the students to ask questions or concerns they may have about the procedure. Hope this helps!
