getting students involved
After 15-20 minutes of lecture I will have various quick games that the class can be involved in. One of those is to hang several large sheets of paper around the room and divide the class into small groups. Each group starts with one paper and writes down something they have learned from the lecture. The groups rotate until all groups have reached all papers.
Hi Michael,
You certainly do not want students to detach. You may want to try small group activities to generate student involvement.

I have found this approch to work when able. some of the classes are not close enough to lab to do this and when i try some students detatch
I am fortunate enough to have my lab adjacent to my classroom. Rather than delivering all my lecture and then doing demonstrations in the lab. We go to the lab and I do my demonstration, right after I've delivered the lecture on the task. If I have a video on the task I will show it the same day. I am frequently changing the method of delivery, it gets the students up on their feet and involved with hands on tasks while the lecture/video is fresh in their minds. I also like to budget time during lecture to pursue the students interests and comments as they pertain to the curriculum. Once the students see that their experiences are relevant, class participation improves dramatically.
Hi Blanche,
Peer learning is a great form of learning to test students knowledge and for helping others better understand.

Hello I have experimented with students participating in reviews as small groups,at the beginning of class for about the first 10 min. daily, of the previous days lecture and procedure helps, untill the asscessment day. The sheet of paper is a brillant idea thanks
I like this idea. Not only do they get to be active and share ideas with each other, but if you let them know ahead of time they know they have to listen so they will have something to share. Good Job!
Hi Laura,
You have to attach an assignment to some teaching aids that you utilize so that students pay attention by knowing that they will be held accountable.

Yes, it is the request and given expectation that keeps them engaged in the lecture. I have given the students 5 to 10 questions to answer on paper during and just after a power point. This keep them engaged also. I would like to continue that and turn into a group activity with a conversation around what was recorded.
Hi Allen,
You will love it even more once you put it to practice! This exercise pulls everyone together.

I love this!!! I am going to add this on Monday. what great way to get them involved, and test what they are getting out of the lecture.
Hi Warren,
Students pay attention more to the lecture when they know they have to go to the lab and apply what they have been taught through lecture.

Hi Martha,
It is hard to get sleepy when you are ACTIVELY engaged in the learning process. Students love it when active learning is taking place.

I think it is important to pay attention to the students actions in the classroom during lectures. I have learned there attention span varies depending on what the topic is it is very helpful to take time and go to lab and apply the information to a hands on project. The lectures seem to get the students more involved and you begin having more student input in the classroom .
I love your idea. I agree that students should be ative in learning. I go back to the way i felt as a student. I had a horrible time sitting there and listening to lecture or reading overheads. My brain would go in to overload and shut down then before I knew it I was sound asleep and being woke up by the instrucor.
Hi Lisa,
What a creative fun way to get student involvement. Students love having fun while learning.
