Freedom Writing and Active Learning
I am considering integrating a "Freedom Writers" aspect to my courses next quarter. The idea is that students would use writing as a means to not only work through their own problems, but also to inspire others. Has anyone used the "Freedom Writers" book before? I need tips/suggestions!
Thanks in advanced!
Hi Elizabeth,
It will amaze you what students write when you do this exercise. We learn a lot about our students from this exercise that can help us better be able to deal with our students.

Hi Lacey,
Sounds like fun! I remember doing a similar exercise. It really gets the brain going.

I find that students really enjoy having the opportunity to write down their thoughts and opinions. It seems as though writing gives a student the chance to really say what they're feeling without worrying about an immediate reaction.
I have not used the book, however I have taken part of a "freedom Writers" activity. We were given a subject or topic to write about and a specific amout of time to complete the paper. The writing was to be continuous with out lifting the pincle and with out pause. Puncuation and format was oput the window, it was all just continus thought. Very fun!!
Hi Marcie,
I've never used this tool, but it sounds like a great idea. Our students need as much writing opportunities as possible.
