Active Learning

I find it most helpful to allow the student to think their way through the application of procedures discussed in a real world situation.

Hi Chris,
I concur! Students want to and need to know how they are going to benefit from the course. Students like knowing how they can apply what they learn in the classroom on the job.

I always try to relate to real world applications. I find that it grabs their attention and it adds to the value of the lesson if they know how they are going to apply this information at their employer. To a student adding value to the class justifies the expence they are paying.

Hi Kathryn,
Active learning is exciting for our students, and they really learn a lot from it.

I think it is best to have students learn actively in Career Colleges because they've been out in the real world, actively learning every day. Some students don't like the idea of sitting in a lecture because it makes them feel like they are in grade school.

Hi Kristina,
We have to try our best to keep students excited and motivated. Each day is an oppotunity to encourage students.

I agree. In a job situation, most employees will be expected to perform adequately and solve problems independently. If we do not allow them sufficient time to do so when completing in-class activities, we do them a disservice. Sometimes, waiting a bit longer does wonders!

I think it is important to allow students to think for themselves, but I find that students are easily discouraged in the beginning. I try to begin each active learning activity with a demonstration that helps them get the ball rolling.

Hi Rebecca,
Students need to know just how much they have to add. We have to cheer our students on at all levels.

Students have plenty to add to the application of procedures in real world situations if they are allowed to.

Hi Robert,
Yes, because they have to think for themselves on the job.
