pure lecture method
I totally agree this method is istructor centered however it sometime can be the best method to delivery certain material. I totally love the cardiovascular system. To me it is total levcture that I need to explain the blood flow and would not be as beneficial if students tried to learn this topic on their own.
Hi Laurel,
Hands-on is the best! Students retain so much more from doing.

For cardiovascular, since I started out as an elementary teacher, I purchased white t-shirts. We took markers and drew the heart and cardio-system with the markers on everyone. Although the students were in a medical school they learned the system, by labeling the parts on each other. Learning and doing. Lectures are great, but so is hands-on!
Hi John,
There are some assignments that are just more memorable than others. Students tend to enjoy and remember hands-on and exciting assignments. Pure lectures can be easily forgotten.

Tonia,
One class I took on anatomy required us to be prepared to have the teacher give us a body part and we had to discuss the routing of blood flow back to the heart. This was a good way to get around the pure lecture - I still remember doing this and it was many years ago in a classroom in Alabama.
Hi Ma. Louella,
Trying utilizing different teaching methods, videos, graphics, games, and skeletal identification.

Pure lecture has its pros and cons. If it is an A and P class maybe ok but students also get bored easily and they start to lose interest. They start staring at the clock
Hi Richard,
There is nothing more excited for students than when you teach from personal experience. Our students love knowing that we have been there, done that, so to speak. Experience brings about wisdom as well.

I like the lecture method in anatomy, but I activate it with my personal experience from the practice. Example : Go to deep with a psa injection ,you may end up with a hematoma. How do I know ,because I have done it.This gets students attention and discussions thrive. So they are learning anatomy and some of its implications in actual practice.
Hi, Tonia -
Technical or industry specific education does, in my opinion, generally lends itself better to a lecture-centered delivery as opposed to an active learning one. In my Pharmacology class, I first discuss the topic, then follow it up with a multimedia re-enforcer, usually video. I try to get my students to think by asking them questions such as "What would you do in this situation?"
Hope this helps.
Hi TONIA,
Sometimes you just can not get around pure lecture, including some visual aid with lecture is always nice.
