Use of discussion

I find that opening up discussion during lecture promotes active learning and makes lecture much more interesting to the students.

Hi Matthew,
Discussion is always great! Discussion breaks the monotony from plain old lecture all the time. Most students really become engaged when they can share their information with others.

I have found it helpful to stop every few minutes to discuss what was just conveyed in the lecture. This helps to break up the curriculum into small parts which makes it more digestable. This also allows for interaction each student to discuss what they have seen during their own experiences in their daily job activities.

Hi Thomas,
I think it is a good idea! As you stated, just monitor things to make sure everything is going smoothly.

I have had difficulty getting people to keep a discussion going. I am going to try allowing students to get on their smartphones and tablets to research the topic and allow them to bounce ideas and concepts off one another. I have been experimenting with having student dictate the content of the lecture and as long as I maintain order and discipline, the class seems to progress at a good rate.

In classes that are based on information I try to promote discussion and interest by finding regular material to relate to what I'm presenting. By merging the material I'm teaching with common information it makes the material easier to relate to.

Hi Tony,
You make want to try some hands-on activities with your students to generate even more interest. Students love to apply the theory they have learned.
