Active Lerning

Only one problem we might get in implementation of this method is Time Management. Some time syllabus is too lengthy and we have only few days to complete it.

We have some students that like the active learning approach, however, there are a few who just refuse to participate. They just sit there or get so frustrated they quit trying. When you try to get them involved they say " why can't you just give me the answer that's what I've paid for". How do others deal with students like this? By the way it seems to be the younger students most apt to respond this way.

Hi Cynthia,
A question/discussion period is always a good way to determine if students are grasping the material.

I to agree that sometimes there just isn't time to assign learning tasks. One of the things I like to do to encourage active learning is asking questions. When I introduce a new topic I ask the students what it is and what they think it may be about. This encourages discussion of the topic prior to my "lecture", and gets everyone involved and thinking. Then as I lecture, or explain different pieces of information, I ask lots of questions to see if they are following me, or have comments or questions. That way I have immediate feedback and know if they are grasping the material.

Hi Dinesh,
Time is really of the essence! You must move quickly and manage your time well.
