Active Learning in Anatomy and Physiology

I am a fairly new instructor in Anatomy and Physiology. I find the idea of Active Learning very interesting. I am concerned though that with such an "information heavy" course, that I will struggle with finding active learning ideas and still be able to teach the students all of the information that we need to cover in the course. Any suggestions?

Hi Brittany,
I love the variety of teaching aides you use to make the class active, fun, live, exciting, and interesting.

Hi Rachel,
I teach A&P classes at a Technical College. I love utilizing active learning in my class because it keeps the students focused and of course it keeps them from not falling asleep. Anatomy courses can be rough for some students so I try to incorporate as much as possible to keep them interested, to hopefully learn better, and not get too overwhelmed. I will stop during lecture every so often and ask questions to see if what I just lectured was clear enough for the students and they comprehended it. I also have disc the students use to identify different structures of the human body. Crossword puzzles, word searches, and videos where they have to answer questions about the video works well too.

Hi Melanie,
My instructor plays games for test reviews, uses crossword puzzles, and uses the skeleton to have the students label body parts.

Yes this is one of the hardest courses to intgrate active learning. We struggle with this on our campus. This is a great idea thank you.

Hi Simona,
Visual adds better clarity and students love hands on.

In the past, I have given the students a a topic group. for instance, bones/muscles. I would have them to demonstrate the orgin and insertions. They would demonstrate this infront of the class. The students have fun because they are actually using a human body and it gives them a better visual.

Hi Rachel,
Some coures are a lot easier to promote hands-on activities. My A&P instructors use the skeleton a lot for active learning. I also know them to use word searches and crossword puzzles as well.
