It is always important to be sure students are participating in active learning including asking questions, theaory and discussion
Hi Richard,
Great idea! My students are given a participation grade of 5%, which encourages students to participate.

Hi Araceli,
I encourage participation by giving a 5% participation grade. Five points really make a difference at the end of the grading period.

Hi Francine,
I agree! We need to make sure students are participating in every way!
Hi Kim,
Anytime you have students do worksheets based on what you have lectured, this is a form of active learning. Also having stdents write various papers, and you grade the papers based on grammar, punctuation, capitalization, this too is a form of active learning. You can even put your students in small groups and have them complete their worksheet together, and express why a particular answer is what it is. Critiquing others work fall under active learning in this case as well. I am sure you do these things. You are doing more active learning with your students than you think.

I teach English at a business college, which includes grammar, punctuation, capitalization, etc. I'm having a hard time thinking of ways to incorporate active learning into this context. Any ideas?
Hi Lovett,
You may want to lecture on a concept and right after you lecture on the concept have the student apply. Some students just need more and may have to come in for tutoring so that they can get the one-on-one time.

What happens when they just cant match lecture and hands on? I have tried everything from starting assignment and standing there step by step. Is there something im not doing.
Hi Francine,
I agree! We need to make sure students are participating in every way! When they are not participating, we need to make them aware.
