I am an accounting instructor. I have recently used an active learning strategy in my cost accounting class. I allowed the students to work as a group to formulate and design 6 multiple choice questions (one from each chapter covered). I used those questions on the comprehensive final exam. The students had the opportunity to read through the topics and develop constructive questions which lead to a better understanding of the course topics. They were interested and engaged and I am certain that I will use this strategy in the future.
Hi John,
Changing from slides to another teaching method is generally welcomed by students. Students enjoy group activities, role playing, scenarios, case studies, field trips, guest speakers, etc.

Hi Mary,
Role playing is really enjoyed by students because it makes learning feel real. Role playing will be various scenarios they will encounter in the workplace.

Hi Carolyn,
I think students helping each other is great! Sometimes students can explain a concept differently from the instructor, and the student gets it.

Hi Vickie,
Competition is good in this sense. Students really get into it, and they love it, and most importantly they learn and really retain the information. The proof is in the pudding. Students really do well on their tests from having played jeopardy.

Hi Gerald,
You may want to try some hands-on exercises as well to promote active learning. Students really love putting theory into action.

Hi Juanito,
Students really learn more by doing! A great practice is to lecture, demonstrate, and then have the students do.

Hi Maria,
Awesome exercise! Some students will go to the extreme to share thorough research. In a situation as this, students will sometimes give even more information based on their research than the instructor would have shared. Great exercise to get students involved.

Being in the the world of ultrasound, I find it very helpful to role-play during class. That is something the students can relate to in class as well as their clinical experience.
Students will help each other if allowed. If Iam busy with another student, students will assist each other, this reinforces their learning as well as helps another. I monitor them and will assist if they need additional help.
I like the jeopardy game and others like it. It really gets the students involved. In the past, I allow 2-4 teams to create a game. They chose the topic from a list. Student participation is at its highest when they are competing. Be careful, they may get a little too involved.
Hands on activities. Q & Ans during the lecture.
I teach a course on military campaign planning. One of the session is on cultural awareness. Included in the class are international miltary student. Rather than have the students sit though slides. I break down the class into groups and have them coordiante for some type of service (training area, water use, etc). This not only teaches them about the culture but gives them an appreciation of strategic negotiation.
I try to make students more active learners by giving them lots of small quizzes and then have another student correct the paper and advise the first student where he/she made an error. If you wish to learn something, teach it.
I know that my ultrasonography students are having active learning whenever I use demonstration phantoms in my lectures. I actually have them practice on the scanning techniques immediately after explaining to them how the protocols are done.
I always encouraged group discussions in my class.
I assign students to make powerpoint presentations on certain topics in the module.
I usually lecture for HIPAA but recently, I found that letting students research and share their information with the class by groups of two or three is more effective. Within one group. the information and data collected and summarized and reported in class. Participation is enhanced and discussion become more dynamic.
Hi Jeanne,
Students do a lot better when they learn through fun! Fun makes learning stick.

Hi Michael,
Guided notes work well too! Students like the guided notes due to being able to pay more attention to the lecture instead of just focusing on taking notes.

Hi Jerry,
Students love doing this type of work. It is amazing the high quality of work you get from some team. Some students have a knack for instructing. Excellent way to break the monotony.
