Class time
I feel like some classes are best done as a lecture. However, I do love engaging students with discussions and relating upcoming concepts to something they can relate to on a daily basis.
Hi Denise,
That's right! It is good for us to put ourselves in our students shoes from time to time. No one likes being bored.

Hi Robert,
That's right! Even adult learners need to be guided and led in order to create a classroom environment that is conducive for effective learning to take place.

I agree! I would zone out myself! I try to think of myself as the student and what I would want to experience in a classroom. Not strait lecture for 2 hours. zzzzzzzzzz............... :)
When the material bein covered is directly related to something in the students daily life, discussion always breaks out. Everyone has a story to tell and they stand taller when it's heard. If you just stay on top of the guiding and leading part of it, they will teach it for you.
Hi Biftu,
Students love it when a class involves more than just lecture. Students want to learn through active learning. Students would rather be doing than just sitting listening to us talk.

Hello Kurtis,
You are absolutely right, while some classes can be done as a lecture, I found my students enjoying and learning more when I mixed the lecture with case studies, small group activities and jeopardy game. They seem to enjoy it.
Hi Michael,
Yes, you have it! All lecture bores everyone! Mix things up with some hands on involved.

I teach to primarily adult learners. I have found that with our longer lectures if there is not some activity to break it up they tend to zone out as the day goes on. I have way better success with adding in some form of an active lab.
Hi Stephen,
I have been teaching for more than 25 years, and I have found that even adult students enjoy and benefit from activities. The activities really need to tie in with the lesson. We all love having fun, especially having fun while learning.

Since my students are out of high school it seems to me that they are beyond the activity stage. At this point they are focused on a degree and life plan. Relating my experiences during a lecture ties in real world experience and either creates excitement or a realization of what is ahead, so I have to agree with Kurtis Pierce. But I am careful to relay only what is relevant to the lesson plan.
Hi Kurtis,
Some classes really are best done as a lecture, but even with lecture, you should include some type of activity so that students have somewhat of a variety.
