Not only is it a problem for the student you attempt to become a pal with, it will affect the way the rest of the students relate to student and the instructor in question.

I agree 100%. There is a fine line between being friends and being friendly. As instructors we have the obligation to show we care and are interested in our students success, but under no circumstances are we obliged to become "new" best friends. If we do cross the line, confussion sets in with the students in exactly where they stand.

Well said. The is a common problem with new instructors. They want their students to succeed and the sometimes become too close to the students in the process. As you know experience helps them to develop an understanding of the boundaries that need to be established between students and faculty.
