As a court reporting instructor, how can I motivate my students to practice more?

Hi Thomas,
Good suggestion. Thanks for sharing. Are there other suggestions or strategies you have found that will help students do their work at home?
Gary

This is always a tough issue getting students to work at home. I have found if you make it interesting for them it may work. In your case if you have them watch a TV show with a court case on it and have then transcribe what they hear on TV they could do this while doing something they enjoy.

Hi Nikki,
Such a simple concept yet in many cases hard to understand. More skills equal more opportunities.
Gary

I agree with you and do the same in my field.

The more they know and the more successful they are will only help them achieve more in their job. This could result in more pay.

Hi Resa,
Good suggestion. Not only is their practice done they are still fresh from what they have been learning in school. This creates a tie between school and application.

Hi Debbie,
You can offer different kinds of incentives to get the students motivated to work toward skill development. You can form teams that compete with each other. You can also offer individual incentives such as steps or progression points for which they receive awards. These awards can range from simple ribbons or medals to food rewards. Even though you are teaching adults they really get into reward systems. Find out what appeals to them the most and then go from there.
You can also bring in guest speakers to talk about proficiency levels and what certain skill levels mean to being hired, salary differences and promotions. Past graduates work great for this.
Hope these ideas are of help to you.

If they do their practice immediately when they get home from school, it isn't hanging over their heads all the rest of the day and they can enjoy their evening with their families and friends.
