Ugg Boots and Scrubs!!
How do you adress a student who is clearly violating school dress code?
Hi Shirley,
This is one of the things I really stress with my students. I want them to act and look like professionals. You are doing that with your dress code so the students will be used to such dress by the time they complete their training. I am always amazed at students that think they can dress anyway they want and be accepted into the work place. It just doesn't work that way and experienced workers know it. They have to get the message. Keep up the good work.

Hi, we have a dress code at our school, which states that each student must dress for their profession, so for my students they have to be in scrubs and tennis shoes or nursing shoes. This is in the students handbook, and I also address this on the first day of class. I still have students that come to class in shorts, flip flops, and tank tops. I will send the students home when they come to class dressed this way, one it is not professional, two it is against the schools dress policy, I ask the students if they think that they can go to work dressed like this, then you can't come to school dressed like that
Hi Paul,
I can really appreciate your frustration. Consistency is important if a professional standard is going to be upheld. I would suggest that you talk your college administration about this situation and see if a policy of consistency can be created and implemented. If this is not possible maintain your own standard of excellence and professionalism. It is to you, you must answer and by setting this standard you know you are reflecting the standards of the field you can feel satisfied with your stance.

In my room it isn't a problem, but in the rest of the school, other teachers aren't taking the same role in uniform standards. This is the most frustrating thing for me. I wish I knew how to address this situation.
We have a dress code here, the students have some, read some lee way. Because we are an automotive training facility, the hair has to be collar length, no jewlery, no loose clothes, etc. Leather shoes or boots are required in the lab, NO tennis shoes. The majority of the students follow the guidelines, however there is a small section that keeps having to push the line. What we try to do is teach them to have a professional appearance, some don't quite get it, as they progress thru the school and they get work, it comes to them though. If they look like a slob, no one will hire them. I have had some come back and thank me for cracking down on the dress code.

I agree with Renee. I dont let them into class. If you come into work completely unprepared, chances are they will send you home for the day. If you come to class unprepared, it would be unfair of me to let you sit in on class when everyone else came properly prepared.

Hi:
After several days of marking attendance and school appearance standards I show the good at our line up for uniform standards. Today I showed all the students their 5 days of class grades so far and who needed to improve. I addressed those who needed to improve by showing them the notes on each day's appearance and need to improve. We will see how tomorrow goes...
Yes. Given that the students should already know the schools policies and standards and that "inspectors" would show up at any given time,,,it is essential that they comply..but I know of some instructors who allow the students to be more lenient on their dress codes, especially if the class is in the evening. I always remind them that if the inspectors do show up or the night supervisor, they will be asked to go home and change. I also take off points and ultimately it will affect their grade. not to mention, it looks sloppy and unprofessional.
I am at a culinary school and how we deal with this problem is that we do not let them in class.
We have a formal line up for every class. They are graded on line-up/ appearance and professionalism. We can also take off points.
You should first pull your student aside and inform her of school policy, give student a copy of the school policy that addresses the dress code. I would also give student a warning and have student sign off on it, so the student will know that their dress code violation is a serious matter. I would also, let the student know that if the violate the dress code again, I will send her home.
By what ever disaplinary means are available to you. Suspension, grade reduction, removal form class, removal to an adminitrator's office, whatever. It should be remembered that this situation will only remedied if the rules are clearly defined up-front be and if the administration behind you backs you up.
