I work in the office but also Teach...

I work in the student services office at my school and i am also training to be an instructor. Do you think this hurts me or helps to be a better instructor?
In one way i know a lot about the students as individuals and in another they don't see me as an instructor, they see me as the office person.
Let me know what you think?

Hi Molly,
The big difference I think will be revealed through student feedback. Through assessment and application you will be able to see what the students have learned and how they are applying the information to their career development growth.

This is a concern for me as well. Working in the Academic Department (advising, registration, etc.) and then teaching creates a difficulty for me. Am I really teaching them my lessons, or just presenting? I give a lot of presentations for Orientation and such, and I teach the "Student Success" course. Each week I was well prepared to have discussions and activities and other things to bring the topic of the week to life, but when each class ended I continuously asked myself if I just taught them something or if I just presented ideas. How do I learn to pick out the difference?

sure, the more insight one has into the inner workings of the individual students advantages and disadvantages, the more one can use this knowledge to be a better person and teacher

Hi Justin,
I that you have to take advantage of opportunities that are presented to you. Since you are working in the student services office you are seen in one situation and then when you move into the instructor role as another. By having experience in the student services office you know what the common concerns are so you can plan to answer the most common questions and address concerns when you start your class.
You have to set the tone for the class and being the instructor so the students will start to identify you as being an instructor. You will do fine with this transition.
