Frank we all make some form of mistkes we just need to learn from them.

It is always important for me on the first day of class to introduce myself and actually give them a little bio of me. I want them to know where I have been even before I entered the field I teach. I think this humanizes me as an instructor. I will then ask for thier introductions and a bio of them. It lets them know that we all started out sitting in thier seat as a student as well.

Absolutly. I couldn't agree more. On the first day, while calling roll, I will purposely, and sometimes not, mispronounce a student's name just to break the ice. I do this even if I know the correct pronunciation to show that I too will make mistakes, thus showing them that it is okay to make mistakes as long as you are trying!

i make mistakes just like everone else

Jeff, i agree whole heartedly! i consider my self a little rough around the edges. I also call it like i see it. But as long as my students know what to expect from me, then that sets the tone and the bar for them. Meaning... i am human too and i make mistakes. And when i goof, man its like comedy central in my class. I love it, because it lets everyone have the oppurtunity to loosen up and relax at my expense. it makes for a slightly relaxed state of affairs when i call on a student to answer an impossible question. And it does seem to get the thought processes flowing throughout the whole entire room. not just from a select few students

I tell my students from the beginning that I will show & treat them with the same respect as I recieve from them. We should have fun but not be disrespectful.

Yes. This is a very important step for a student. I feel that the Instructor is the one who must set this tone. Being over bearing is not it, and being to lax is not it.. but a good repore with the students at the start and making sure the best tool they have in ther tool box is their mind.

Even if called upon to answer a question and if they get it wrong, pointing out that they did use their thought process to come to the conclusion that they did is great.

I feel that this gives them confedance to go foward in the class and to try to be more a part of it by feeling that they are trying in their own way and are not being belittled by anything that they try to do.

We all goof.... woops. did it again.

Jeff I absolutely agree. I remember when I was a student I was one of those scared to death feeling so much pressure to get the answers right. It was not until I connected with a teacher who encouraged us to relax which made everything so much easier. This is the kind of teacher I strive to be.

You should treat everyone like you would expect to be treated.
