I believe that there is no one set style of modeling professionalism in the class/lab in fact there many different key styles of molding professionalism in and out of the classroom but no matter what style we choose we must lead by example stay focus and make sure that the student under stand that learning is of the outmost importance in the class/lab.
Yes, professionalism is what we need to portrait to the students because this is a direct reflection on what they precive of you. If you don't come across to the class as a professional your students will begin to question your abilities as a teacher and your skills pertaining to the subject matter.
I agree with you Marcos that there is no one set style of modeling professionalism in the class/lab in fact there many different key styles of molding professionalism in and out of the classroom but no matter what style we choose we must lead by example stay focus and make sure that the student under stand that learning is of the outmost importance in the class/lab.
Hi Kathy,
Well said. With high expectations you are creating high level goals for your students. Keep up the good work and I know your students will benefit.
Gary
I agree with this passage. We, as instructors, come with a high level of expectations for what we would like to see in our students, when in reality, we truly lead by example. This doesn't guarantee anything, but will produce positive end results when students make a decision to emulate positive behaviors exhibited by their instructor.
Thanks
I have just printed your reply to use during the opening class. There is quite a lot of complex material. This method will help to spread the workload.
Hi Mable,
Good idea about how to encourage all students to be a part of the class discussions. For the really shy students you might want to break the class down into small groups (3-4, 5-7) and have them discuss a case study or problem solve. Experience has shown that these small groups helps the students to start talking with their peers and generally will start participating in the general class discussions. Another way to get students talking in the large class setting is to put together a student panel of 3-4 students. Have them present on a topic. By have 2-3 other students with them they will not be so nervous and will be more confident. Have the students sit down behind a table. The sitting helps to reduce their fears and the table creates a barrier in their minds so they don't feel so exposed. These are little things but they really help those students especially non-traditional students to feel that they can participate in class discussions.

I would establish a system the first day of class that lets the students know that everyone is encouraged to participate in discussions. This way the student requiring re-directing would know that everyone needs a chance to talk.
Hello Carlos,
I have a question about re-directing a student who leads in with good questions but then continually monopolizes the conversation from a personal perspective. What approach do you find the most helpful in shutting them down while still keeeping their ego intact?
Thank you,
Glenda Bisbee
The best professionalism in class that can work well, is to stay in subject, and only talk topics related to that main subject. When the class takes off in a different directions, it open the window of opportunities for the class to initiate a different atmosphere!!!
Professionalism in the classroom must be addressed as the most important aspect of being hired. The employer knows the educational background already. Interview attitude, dress code, and punctuality are most important on the first interview and first day of employment.
Hi Angela! You're on point about walking the talk. The roles that we assume as professional adult educators should define our own teaching outcomes; in other words, being effective at our core roles positively influences our instructional delivery, teaching methodologies, classroom management techniques, student relationships and professionalism.

Yes I totally agree.I think we should be professionals that care about the learning experience and we should also walk the talk.
Our students should be the focus of our attention.
