What makes a good teacher

Is it education

If you have passion and show excitement for the subject you are teaching you are more likely to catch the students attenion and will motivate them to want to learn. If your not excited to be there then why should the student want to be there.

A lot of it is being able to assess student needs and make a plan to meet them.

The ability to connect with your students as well as to keep them interested and motivated.

I think part of being a good teacher is taking into account that each student is an individual, with important experiences and challenges they bring to the classroom. A group can learn much from their individual differences. Part of the instructor's job is to make space for respecting diversity.

I agree with both Jena and Gil. A good teacher invests the time and energy in the learning of a student. Otherwise, that instructor simply is a lecturer, and being a good teacher is about contributing to the students development overall.

I agree to all of the responses so far regarding what makes a good teacher. I would like to take this a step further. A good teacher is effective both in the classroom and out of the classroom as well. What I mean is that the teacher must be ready to not only answer student questions between class periods, but also work with administration in turning around paperwork, attending meetings, and participating in professional development.

A good teacher has to care about the performance level of the individual student, and take personal responsibility for each success and each setback. A good teacher should introspectively assess their level of committment toward a common goal. Good teachers do not teach, they help a student learn, setting the tone and conditions to positively affect a students behaviors or understanding.

the ability of the instructor to actually have your students truly understand what it is that you are teaching them so they can apply it in the work place, and remember it in they're future.also to be dynamic enough to have an approach that reaches all your students.

Hi Larice,
It is a number of things that blend together to create a competent instructor. Career experience and knowledge about how to share the content of the course is important. The use of common sense will greatly aid in teaching. Being human and treating students with respect needs to be a part of your professional approach to the classroom.
