method of teaching

what's the best method of teaching?

Hi Nancy,
Thank you for the excellent example of how instructional delivery can change as a result of circumstance and result in a positive situation. You shift enabled you to learn about and use a different technique that has proven successful for you.

I think that really depends on 2 things, the subject matter and the comfort and skills of the instructor. Some techniques work very well for some instructors and not at all for others. An example of something that does not work for me is role playing. I don't like participating in it myself, so I can't make it work in my classroom. I know people who get wonderful results from it, though.

I like to teach by lecture. That's not the most effective teaching method for most students, though. I now teach entirely online, and because of that, I really can't lecture. I have learned to teach by asking questions, which works very well. It keeps students engaged and they like it. I think it's made me a better instructor, even though it is a change that came about because of situation.

I wish there was an easy answer to this. There are so many variables including subject matter, person style, clientele, time, facilities and about a thousand more. One method might work best one day with one topic and a different method would be better the next day or even later in the same class on the same day. Keep it real, make it worthy or the time you are spending and develop many styles of your own.
