developing as an instructor

Hi Patrick,
Yes. The students put on the comment cards that they would like to have the PowerPoint slides put online as well as shared in class. A simple suggestion that was easy to do and it showed the students that I was responsive to their comments. When I put them online (we use Blackboard) I put them in the format so they could print them off six to a page with lines for notes beside each slide. They really like the little added touch and commented on that as well.

Can you give some examples of things you have changed because of those comment cards.
I think a questionaire about what they like and disliked is a great idea. Sounds easy enough to implement on a daily basis. That way I can continue on the things they like and work on the things the students did not like. I Will give it a try.
Thanks
I will try out that idea. I don't have a big class so they come straight and tell me most of the time. Nevertheless I'm going to try your method.
Hey James,
This sounds like a great idea. I actually have implemented a midpoint evaluation survey I have my students fill out (one that I tailor towards the course) other than the one the school provides at the end of the quarter. Other instructors have used it and found it helpful as well. This way I get feedback in a time frame where I can do something about it rather than say, "Oh well, class is over. I'll have to make these adjustments next time I teach this class." But even then, the students I'm teaching are different and therefore I have a different classroom environment.
The next time I teach, I'll be sure to try and implement this DPOS (your daily pass out slips) for immediate modifications to my teaching. Sounds practical.
Hi Rita,
Good advice. We use the CASE model. Copy And Share Everything. This include ideas, ice breakers, outlines, etc. Anything and everything that will help us do our jobs even better.
Gary
In addition to what you have. I think you can also have them suggest based on previous experiences with other instructors they might have had that worked for them and see if it is something you can adopt.
I think that is a great way to see how not only how you are coming across, but it is also a great way to be able to provide special attention to your students. So the only thing I would do is make them put there name on it, and put some time aside to help them along with what they are struggling with. Thanks for the great idea!
I like this idea a lot! I am going to try to use that in my class. I do use hand out questions a few weeks into my class asking if I am teaching to their style of learning and what improvements can be done. But, with this daily exercise I think you can get more feedback throughout the whole class. Thank you for that idea!
Hi James,
Excellent way to get feedback from your students that is accurate and direct. When I have used such a method I have only received good feedback without any student venting. Has really helped me so I am sure that you are benefiting greatly from this exercise.
Gary
I do a little exercise called a plus/delta at the end of each class. I pass out slips of paper and ask the students to write down one thing they liked about the day's class and one thing they didn't. I do not have them put their name on the slips.
I read each slip and try to keep doing the things they like and find ways to impove the dislikes.
