Adrian,
These are engaging ways to show students examples of how what appears to be rather basic is in reality very impacting for the devices effected as well as the outcomes that will result. You have a very good grasp on how to much such things interesting for your students.

Douglas,
With the speed at which technology is and has been changing with all of your experience you do have a historical perspective to share with your students. I know they enjoy hearing how you have lived through and been a part of many of those advances and how these advances impact the devices and methods they are using.

I find that in teaching computer science that not only knowing the subject, but the industry as well can help out a lot. Even with some of the more uninteresting parts of understanding computers like voltage regulation, showing what can happen when things go wrong can be a fun way to teach the importance. IE and overclocking lab where the voltage is pushed too far and the computer shows what happens from there
Teaching Intro to Computer Technology and having been in this field for over thirty years, I find an absolute passion for technology and learning how things work, and sharing that knowledge and understanding with others. Some of the history of computers can be dry and sometimes uninteresting, but when I relate actual events that I was involved in to these historical timelines as though the events just happened yesterday, the students have something more tangible to grasp than just reading text out of a book. I try to make the lessons come alive. I also try to encourage them to recognize how new technologies are possible and they have an amazing opportunity to become involved in some breakthrough technology, just as others have.
Beverly,
Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are offering both in terms of your lectures, small group work and reviews. This is what keeps them focused and moving forward in the course.

Motivating students can sometimes be a difficult task especially if it is a difficult subject to teaching. After I lecture, I would divide my class into groups to review the material. I gave a quiz and offered points to the group that answered the questions correctly. This seemed to get my students motivated about learning the content.

Michele,
What a great compliment you are being paid for all of your effort. I wish you continued teaching success.

Michele,
Making it real for the students is so valuable in the learning process. Your approach is doing that since you are expanding the application of what they are learning beyond just the class and applying it to themselves.

As Instructors, we need to be enthusiastic about the material we are teaching,as well as showing the positive reinforcement of praise when our students perform well. I have been Instructing for 9 years and have had many students say "I'm going to make you proud" because they know I am rooting for them and care about their success.
I agree. I am a Nursing Instructor and when I have taught Anatomy and Physiology, I try to tell students to "appreciate" how fascinating our bodies are, not just memorize the material for a test. If they appreciate what they are learning, they will be more likely to understand how the body processes work and then be able to identify when the body is not functioning properly, as in a disease.
Wendy,
You are a great resource to your students since you are in the field teaching about the field. I am sure they are going to have a great time on the field trip. They are going to come back to class motivated and excited to learn even more our their industry.

My current course, Introduction to Fashion, is easy to relate to my full-time job. It is motivating for my students as well as myself to share real world, real time experiences to their education path. We are taking our first field trip to use our knowledge and to differentiate between brand names and national brands etc.
Rachel,
Love your attitude. You are setting the stage for learning each time you meet a class. Your passion for your field and your enthusiasm for teaching about it clearly shows and that gets your students excited. I wish you much success in your teaching.

I come to class with a smile every day, and I make sure that my students know that I am motivated about my subject matter.
I also let students know that I am approachable, which I thihk is important when dealing with adult learners who may not be confident in asking for help.
Lorraine,
The more connections like this you can make the more value the students attach to the course. So keep up the good work of showing them the relevance of what you teach.

i try to connect the material to the real world so they have some reason to want to learn.
I agree, you have to love what you're doing and it will show through to your students.
It is important for instructors to encourage and motivate students, it builds esteem for both teacher and student. I also find that fun group learning demonstrations have proven too be effective and enhances content along with understanding of subject matter. Students enjoy learning in fun relaxed environments.
Gustavo,
This is how you become the instructor of merit that you want to be. Great way to promote learning and career development in your classes.
