Gain interest through relevance

Keep students interested and motivated by finding relevance. It allows students to become more familiar and relate to a topic.

Hi Rishi,
Good points about how to make your course have both application and relevancy to and for students. They need to see how their future is being impacted through the success they are having in the course currently. Sometimes this is lost by students as they get worn down about half way through the course. They needed periodic reminders about their career development.

Depending on the type of course an instructor has to present the need, why learning and being confident about the course is important for them to be successful in the field.Usually if you bring their attention to the fact that at some point of time in their career they will be expected to be accountable individually without any mentor,it definitely brings in more interest from them in the classroom. This is there for the fact that every student has a sense of pride to be able to perform on the job as most of them are very serious on whatever occupation they are engaged in while they are students.

I try to keep students interested by finding relevance on the first day of class. As they introduce themselves I have them tell them a little about themselves, ie what are their hobbies, do they have kids, what profession are they going into and what are they particularly interested in. Then as I go through each unit I try to hit on as many of these as I can. If everyone has kids, I tie it into kids, etc. It can be pretty tricky but there are certain topics everyone can relate to.
