technology in the classroom

I like to appeal to all senses of learning for students. One being Auditory learner, kinesthetic and visual. I use you tube clips for visual, stories for kinethetic, and powerpoints for auditory. all points of view are being attended to.

Hi Charles,
Been there, had that happen. Doesn't leave much when the computer, LCD or some other form of medial fails. This is when you quickly go plan B and hope you have prepared well for using that plan. Also, helps with the sale of antacids because these times do make the stomach churn.

I teach in Game. The classes are 5 hours long. The material is technical but requires a sense of the artistic. My philosophy is that you don't learn to swim just by sitting on shore watching someone else...at some point you need to get wet. I also feel that you can learn as much from your mistakes as from doing it right the first time. I start the class with a discussion of the material to be covered with demonstrations of the tools soemtimes visiting professional artist websites to see their final work. But I spend at least half the class in hands on class exercises which are followed up with take home projects. I want to connect what I show them with the experience of actually doing it in practice. But the bane of my existence is when I plan for all of this and the classroom technology fails.

I am with you. I teach IT and Computer Science, now while this is a technology field many times I have seen just lectures taking place. For me in all of my experience I have found that most people learn by doing or seeing and not just by listening. I always have a computer that will show what I am talking about. It at times seems repetitive but the students definitely respond and appear to be getting much more when I have the demos than when I don't. I think just seeing the examples of what I am talking about helps to confirm and solidify the material.

Adding new techniques to a learning style is so important. Like said before you capture all senses to learning and your keeping up with the technology that is available. In the medical field keeping technology up is a hudge deal.
