Instructors are setting the example to what the students will be facing in their new career path. Remember that we as instrutors are role moldels too

you are 100% correct

I agree with this concept also. Your students need to see you as a professional. They will try to mirror you. You need to uphold this standard; be the role model for them.

Hi Lynn,
Good example of how "old school" ideas about what to look for when hiring someone still apply today. The Golden Rule applies in the employment situation. The person with the gold makes the rules. This is a hard concept for many students to grasp. Dress, attitude and conduct all contribute to success if a person has command of them.

I agree, it is very important to always look professional, neat and clean. the patients will trust you and have a better experience about the office in general. Also where I work they do not approve of piercings or tattoos.

I think appropriate dress also includes grooming...no extreme haircuts or color...makeup that is enhancing and not extreme

i remember my Dad would never hire anyone if there shoes weren't shined...he thought it was a little thing ...but indicated that someone might forget the details in their job

This is very true...we are always concerned with students with tatooes and or piercings

I agree with this wholeheartedly. In order to make it in the workplace they must have pride in their appearance...it translates into ..I like myself...I like my job...

Since we are preparing our students for the "real world" we should model appropriate business attire. We should also explain why not only ability but presentation is important. For example, an employer would rather see a neatly dressed person applying for a job rather than someone in jeans and a t-shirt. If you dress professionally you gain a certain amount of respect as applicant or instructor right off the bat.

Hi Cormel,
Good perspective on why professors are portrayed as disheveled individuals.
Gary

Hi Tani,
Good question. I think it reflects a cultural norm we set for certain occupations or stereotypes. For example commercials when they want to show a smart kid will give him or her glasses. Thus, only smart kids wear glasses. College professors are suppose to be super smart people and super smart people lack in common sense so they don't attend to personal issues such as clean crisp dress because they are thinking all those deep thoughts. I am always amazed at how we let TV dictate our image of a career.

The stereotype of the disheveled professor is well-rooted in fact, as any photo of Einstein or his science colleagues (with a few exceptions) will show. Educators in departments other than science tend to reinforce this perception, too, at many colleges and universities. It is up to the individual instructor to set a standard for each classroom, and to bear in mind that "getting away" with the disheveled look is not helpful for the future of the students.

I completely agree that professional dress is important. Why then do you think that the "typical" university/college professor is often depicted as disheveled?

Many medical offices are very conservative. Not looking or appearing the part may affect yor chances of getting the job.

maintaining their professional appearance gives the students a sense of pride in their daily uniform. this then translates into a positive sense of self, and a more ready learner.

Instructors should set the standard
Students need to know they will be judged on their appearance as well as their skill when trying out for a job
