Student Centered Environment

In an online environment, it is important to establish an student centered online enviroment where student are the major participants in their learning, peers serve as their learning partners, and the instructor serves as the coach, mentor, and facilitator in the learning environment.

Hi Audrey,
I have used this same example with my students at different times. It is very graphic for them. They seem to only see the cost of going to college in general terms and not by the class so missing a class really doesn't cost anything in their minds. I use the example of buying a ticket to go to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando,FL. Once you buy the expensive ticket you just walk back to your car and leave because getting inside of the part is just not worth the effort. The students always laugh at this and then we discuss the actual cost of each class and how much it is of value to them to be in class.

When i was in school earning my degree a few of my classmates did not show up to class and the instructor told us that we were paying for our education. She even broke it down to how much we each pay for an hour of education (around $300). Is that a good way to motivate students?

Awesome topic Lataunia!!

I agree with your concept. I encourage my students to take an active role in their education. I like for them to engage themselves in the classroom; talking with peers and adding value to the class.

Thanks!
