Teaching style comparisons

How do you respond when a group compares your teaching style to the one of another instructor they seem to prefer more?

Hi Stephanie,
One of my favorite quotes to share with instructors is "the beginning of understanding starts with the willingness to listen". You are doing that in the approach you are taking with your students.

having people compare one person to another is normal no matter the situation. As Dr. Myer says just continue to do what you do. BUT I do ask what it is they like or don't like (as regards to the comparison). This lets them know that I am listening to them. Then I consider the comment. If it fits with my style I may incorporate the suggestion. But whatever I do, I listen and then give feedback as to why or why not.

Hi Ari,
I would continue using the instructional style that fits me and be fair and consistent with my approach. It won't be long before the students will see how you operate and you will earn the respect of your students. This means you won't have to worry about being compared to other instructors as you will have stamped your style on the class.
